Munchies as an alternative to analgesics in orthodontics

In clinical orthodontics it is difficult to avoid pressure that produces at least some avascular areas in the PDL. Munchies work by releasing pressure against a tooth at intervals, whilst maintaining the pressure for enough hours to produce the desired biologic response for tooth movement which also assists in maintaining tissue vitality.

This mechanism, by chewing on the Munchies device after orthodontic force is applied, reduces pain markedly—the chewing force briefly displaces the tooth, produces micro-movements and allows a spurt of blood into compressed areas, thereby reducing the size of necrotic areas in the PDL.
